Error with Windows binary, Matlab, and M1qn3 when following inversion tutorial

When following the Inversion tutorial found here:

we are getting the following error at step 3 in Matlab 2017a and 2019b with the latest ISSM binaries for Windows.

"model not consistent: M1QN3 has not been installed, ISSM needs to be reconfigured and recompiled with M1QN3"

M1qn3_matlab.lib
M1qn3_matlab.mexw64 are in c:\ISSM\lib

and M1qn3.m is in c:\ISSM\bin

Has anyone seen this or have a solution?

Taking a look at the configuration files on our end, it does indeed look like M1qn3 is not compiled into the binaries (which also suggests there is an issue with our build system in that the M1qn3 MATLAB lib and mex files should not be generated if M1qn3 is not available). Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I will work on a fix. In the meantime, if you are comfortable with installing ISSM from source, you could try to do so. Otherwise, I will submit the fix ASAP and let you know here when I have done so.

justinquinn well m1qn3 requires a Fortran compiler and right now this is not supported in our windows build (e.g. we don't compile MUMPS, we don't support mpi/parallel simulations, etc).

That’s absolutely right 😅. That said, this capability will be added in the near future. So, my amended suggestion is to simply avoid the tutorials that require MPI. Otherwise, you might look into spinning up a Linux virtual machine and installing the corresponding binaries.

Hi there,

I'm running on a Mac (Sonoma, M1 Chip) with Matlab 2024a, and I'm having problems with the inversion tutorial, too, starting at step 3. Here's what comes up when I execute it in the Matlab GUI:

The same error pops up when I run this step from the command line:

But I'm sure I installed m1qn3. Here are the contents of the m1qn3 folder

and the m1qn3 install folder

Any ideas on what might be causing these errors?

I think you did not configure ISSM with m1qn3. Could you take a look at your configure.sh script and make sure that it has

 --with-m1qn3-dir="$ISSM_DIR/externalpackages/m1qn3/install" \

You're right, it is not in there. Once I add it, do I have to do autoreconf -ivf, make, and make install again?

ok cool! That's an easy fix. You will just need to run your configure.sh script again and compile:

cd $ISSM_DIR
./configure.sh
make -j4 install

(make sure you see checking for M1QN3... yes)

Hmm, no luck - This comes up when I run ./configure.sh

./configure.sh: line 20: --with-m1qn3-dir=/Users/annahayden/trunk/externalpackages/m1qn3/install: No such file or directory

But when I go to that path, it is fine and does exist.

haha! easy, make sure to include \ at the end of the line above (this file is actually supposed to be all on one line, we use backslashes to put each option on one line but they are all related to the same call to configure)
