MPI hostname issue

Hello.

I was able to compile ISSM successfully (I think), however, when I run some of the examples (Lets say the square ice shelf), I get an error: " ssh: Could not resolve hostname LMC-033165: nodename nor servname provided, or not known."

It seems MPI is trying to launch to hostname, but cannot ssh to it? This is happening on the precompiled version, using it in Matlab, as well as the compiled version of ISSM.

For reference, I am using the anonymous trunk, and not the JPL trunk version of ISSM. I also am using the latest MATLAB 2014B.

Hi Josh,

this error message is probably due to the fact that you use some kind of vpn (Research Network at JPL or similar). This changes your network settings and mpich gets confused because it does not know whether you are running your job on a local machine or remotely. The fix the we found is to change your /etc/hosts file (you will need admin privileges with sudo) and make sure to add the following line:


127.0.0.1 LMC-033165

if you already have a similar line with localhost only, just add your machine name to this line:


127.0.0.1 localhost LMC-033165

That way, mpich will know that LMC-033165 is your local machine. Network Connect sometimes resets this file, you will need to do this change again.

Let us know if that does not fix your problem
